I ran across this article by chance on the WSJ website. It talks about the prophecy Joesph Smith made regarding the "Constitution hanging by a thread." Many of us LDS folks my be inclined to vote for a Mormon candidate because of our belief in the possibility that there will be a Mormon who "saves the Constitution." This prophecy has also apparently inspired many LDS people to run for office. Mike Otterson pointed out that the prophecy is not official canon--something I was not aware of, and many other LDS people may not have known. He says, "There may be some members of the church who think that in supporting a Mormon candidate and seeing the possibility of a Mormon president, there may be some sort of scriptural validation." But Mr. Otterson explains, "It begins to take on almost a zealous tone that I find a little worrisome."
Read this article now! It is very, very interesting.

Great article. Interesting. I think he overstates the idea that all these LDS politicians run because they believe they are fulfilling revelation.
The "White Horse" prophecy has been debated for a long time on its merits of being delievered by J. Smith. However, the Prophet, made many similar comments in other sources that are considered much more reliable. Many of his contemporaries quote Smith, as well as making similar prophecies themselves, that it can hardly be denied that he made such comments. I for one believe it. Ezra T. Benson called the Book of Mormon, a "road map" for what will happen in the latter days. Is Mitt the "White Horse", I don't know. I do know he has killer hair.
My understanding of what the "hang by a thread" prophesy means is that the United States government will eventually lose its way and will be but a shadow of its former self one day. By that time, many believers will have already gathered together and will be the only ones strong enough to hold to the principles the Constitution stands for. We will be the only ones left who value the concepts of liberty. This isn't to say that these people will ONLY be members of the church. I believe that all believers who trust in Jesus Christ and wish to follow him will be included, but the leadership will come from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. It won't be a violent revolution of take-over, but a preservation of basic principles the Constitution once stood for.
