For one on the cusp of running for the presidency, this plan leans toward the center, although it has critics on both sides of the aisle. It is more in line with current republican trends in government than the traditional view of smaller government. Employing government spending while adhering to market forces. It could work, or it could just be another failed government program. Time will tell.

Great article. I like the word used, "Civic Responsibility". Seems like a fair compromise however, I would be anxious to find out how they will force small service companies and other businesses to "pay into" the system.
The idea of a "pay into" system is reminiscent of the Social Security quandry. We will have to wait and see how it actually plays out.
Sounds good, something needs to be done; our current system is a lot of things, none of which are good. I agree with many people on the left that we need to do something to help the millions of working poor get coverage, but the socialist healthcare of Europe would cost too much. I will be interested to see what happens, at least Romney is not scared to do something about this problem, and not be content to just let things remain unchanged like so many other polititians.
What do you tie this "mandatory coverage" to? Auto insurance is tied to the licensing of a car. You don't have it, you don't drive. Driving is a basic necessity. What other necessity to we have that the government controls that would FORCE someone to carry medical insurance? And how do we check annualy to make sure they do? Do we tie it to the car licensing too? I like the idea, it would cost us a lot less. Personally, I think just that ALONE would help the system. Even without the government program.
