Reaganomics Revisited

"It is no coincidence that our present troubles parallel and are proportionate to the intervention and intrusion in our lives that result from unnecessary and excessive growth of government." -Ronald Reagan

Twenty-five years ago today, Ronald Reagan was inaugurated as the 40th President of the United States. The following piece takes a look at what Reagan accomplished in his tenure, and how his views on government and economics changed the mindset and practice of many Republicans. The opening statement was from his inaugural address. Sounds like something that could be said today, doesn't it?

The longer I am alive, and the more I study history, and read old quotes or speeches, one thing always occurs to me; Its how contemporary the statement sounds. I was just reading the Gettysburg address for a class the other day, and I could easily imagine Pres. Bush saying the same thing. The old saying, "History repeats itself" is true, politicians are the same today as they were in ancient Greece. It seems to me that the issues we face are cyclical; presidents of the past were talking about and facing the same problems we are facing now. So why havent we solved them? Is it because we the people dont care enough, or that we dont elect anyone willing to go against the grain in washington, or is it a combination of the two? Perhaps if enough of us actually held the folks in Washington accountable we would see some real change.
